The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed conducting a series of airstrikes in Tungar Kara, Zurmi Local Government Area, Zamfara State, targeting bandits who have long terrorised the region.
The operation, which took place earlier this week, successfully neutralised several armed criminals and led to the rescue of some kidnap victims, according to an official statement from NAF.
However, the operation has raised concerns following reports of potential civilian casualties, including losses among local vigilantes. NAF described the reports as deeply concerning and assured Nigerians that it has launched a thorough investigation to determine the facts surrounding the allegations.
In the press release signed by Air Vice Marshal Olusola F. Akinboyewa, Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF emphasised its commitment to the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.
“As a responsible and professional custodian of airpower for the security of the nation, the NAF believes in the absolute value of the life of every Nigerian,” the statement read.
The air force pledged to work with relevant authorities to establish the truth and take necessary actions. NAF also reassured the public of its dedication to minimising harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure during operations.
The ongoing operation in the North West is part of the military’s broader efforts to combat banditry and restore peace to the region, which has faced years of insecurity.
While acknowledging the success of its recent actions against bandits, NAF reaffirmed its focus on protecting lives and upholding its professional standards.
Further updates on the investigation and any resulting measures will be communicated to the public, the statement concluded.
This development comes amid heightened calls for greater accountability and precision in military operations across Nigeria, particularly in areas plagued by banditry and insurgency.
