The Nigeria Army says earlier today, on Monday, April 1, 2024, a minor explosion rattled the Nigerian Army (NA) Cantonment in Ikeja, Lagos, sending ripples of concern through the local community.
The incident occurred on a farmland adjacent to the Mammy Market within the Cantonment premises.
Preliminary reports suggest that the explosion was likely triggered by the burning of refuse and other combustible materials by a farmer tending to the land.
Thankfully, no casualties were reported in the aftermath of the blast.
Given the Cantonment’s recent clearance and certification as free from unexploded ordnance, the incident understandably raises concerns among residents.
The NA has moved swiftly to allay fears, assuring the public that the situation is under control.
Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized that the NA Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has cordoned off the affected area to conduct a thorough investigation into the explosion’s cause.
Residents in the vicinity have been urged to remain calm, with assurances of their safety reiterated.
As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant, committed to ensuring the well-being and security of all individuals within the Ikeja Cantonment and its surroundings.
