Ministry of Police Affairs Unveils 2024 Performance Scorecard

The Ministry of Police Affairs has showcased its achievements for the first three quarters of 2024, highlighting strides in enhancing Nigeria’s security and police operations. Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, made these disclosures during the presentation of the Ministry’s performance scorecard by Hadiza Bala Usman, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination and Head of the Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit, at the Ministry’s headquarters.

The Minister detailed several notable accomplishments, including the establishment of the National Criminal Data Fusion Center (NCDFC) and the strengthening of the West African Police Information System (WAPIS).

These initiatives aim to modernize the Nigeria Police Force’s operations, improve data management, and enhance regional collaboration.

Additionally, efforts to automate specialized police services have been a significant step toward enhancing internal security.

Further achievements include the launch of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), the establishment of Air Squadron bases equipped with surveillance and attack drones, and the recruitment of 30,000 police constables.

Infrastructure development projects such as the construction of modern divisional police headquarters and six quarters for rank-and-file officers were also flagged off.

Gaidam emphasized the Ministry’s focus on police reforms, including the enhancement of operational policies, re-training officers in global best practices, and modernizing police training curriculums.

Welfare initiatives included the launch of the Nigeria Police Veterans Foundation to support retired officers and the introduction of the annual Nigeria Police Awards to recognize professionalism and service.

In 2024, the Ministry facilitated the specialized training of 2,593 officers at recognized institutions within and outside Nigeria.

These efforts aim to bolster the technical and operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.

While acknowledging these achievements, Hadiza Bala Usman highlighted areas requiring improvement.

She noted setbacks in Q3 performance and emphasized the need to address the inability of the Nigeria Police Force to take over reclaimed communities from bandits or insurgents. Insufficient community support and widespread distrust of the police were identified as critical issues.

Senator Gaidam reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to achieving its 16 specific deliverables aligned with presidential priorities. He highlighted plans to enhance police operations through digital technologies, establish robust community policing frameworks, and build public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.

As the Ministry continues its reform and transformation roadmap, Gaidam assured Nigerians of sustained efforts to improve security, enhance police welfare, and restore confidence in law enforcement.

The event, attended by key stakeholders, including senior police officers and ministry officials, marked a significant milestone in the Ministry’s drive toward creating a safer and more secure Nigeria.
