Ministry of Defence Integrates Environmental Sustainability into Armed Forces School Curriculum

In a groundbreaking step towards promoting climate responsibility and sustainable education, the Ministry of Defence has officially integrated environmental sustainability into the curriculum of all Armed Forces Primary and Secondary Schools across Nigeria.

The new policy was formally launched at the Nigeria Navy Secondary School, Kuje, Abuja, during the flag-off ceremony of the National Green School Program. The event was led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Ambassador Gabriel Aduda, who was represented by the Director of Education, Mr. Marcus Kura.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Aduda highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to raising environmentally conscious citizens through education. “This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s climate goals and the Sustainable Development Goals. Armed Forces schools must lead by example in sustainability, equipping students with the skills to safeguard our environment,” he stated.

To ensure effective implementation, the Ministry announced the establishment of a robust Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) framework that will track progress, measure outcomes, and promote accountability across the Armed Forces education system.

In collaboration with the National Green School Program, the initiative will introduce students to hands-on environmental activities such as tree planting, recycling, clean-up campaigns, and sustainability-themed school clubs. According to Mr. Kura, these efforts aim to embed eco-friendly habits in young learners while reinforcing academic knowledge with practical application.

Commandant of the Nigeria Navy Secondary School, CDR. J.O. Ibiang, welcomed the initiative, describing it as a call to action rather than a ceremonial gesture. He thanked the Permanent Secretary for his consistent support and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to fostering a greener future.

The ceremony drew participation from senior officials of the Ministry of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff (represented by Director of Education at Defence Headquarters, COMD Adetunji), military education officers, and representatives from the Ministries of Environment and Education, along with school administrators, teachers, and students.

Event highlights included tree planting exercises, a showcase of student-led recycling innovations, and a formal pledge by schools to uphold environmental values and promote sustainability in their communities.
