Minister Of Information Commends NOUN for Excellence in Open Learning, Media Literacy Drive

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has applauded the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) for its remarkable contribution to expanding access to quality education across the country.

Alhaji Idris gave the commendation in Abuja when he received a delegation from NOUN led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Olufemi Peters, during a courtesy visit to his office.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Rabiu Ibrahim, the Minister lauded NOUN’s outstanding role in promoting open and distance learning as well as its commitment to hosting the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI). The Institute is set for certification in November 2025 at the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Alhaji Idris noted that the establishment of IMILI places Nigeria at the forefront of media and information literacy in Africa, while also aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes integrity, accountability, and public enlightenment.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Professor Olufemi Peters, expressed the University’s deep appreciation to the Ministry for its trust and support, particularly the Federal Government’s ₦250 million grant to facilitate the development of IMILI.

Professor Peters affirmed the University’s commitment to ensuring the success of the Institute, describing it as a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s leadership in global media and information literacy education.
