The Military Pensions Board (MPB) has officially transitioned from physical to electronic verification for military retirees, a move aimed at addressing security risks, reducing the burden on elderly pensioners, and cutting transportation costs, especially for those living abroad.
The announcement was made by the Chairman of the MPB, Air vice Marshal Paul Irumheson following the successful completion of a pilot test for the Electronic Verification Management System. Conducted from February 19 to March 1, 2024, the pilot involved 2,000 pensioners, with only 15 participants failing to meet the verification requirements.
“The pilot test was very successful. The minor issues identified have been addressed to perfect the system,” stated the Chairman.
In light of this success, the Minister of State for Defense, Dr. Bello Matawalle MON, and the Chief of Defense Staff, General CG Musa OFR, have approved the full-scale launch of the Electronic Verification Exercise. The verification period will run from July 1 to September 30, 2024.
According to the board chairman, the MPB has committed to extensive public awareness and education efforts to ensure that all retired pensioners understand how to complete the electronic verification process. Participation in the exercise is crucial, as failure to verify will result in the suspension of pension payments.
“The Board advises all pensioners to actively participate in this exercise. Those that fail to take part will not receive their pensions going forward,” emphasized the Chairman.
This initiative marks a significant step towards improving the efficiency and security of pension disbursement for Nigeria’s military veterans.
