The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a suspect, Onu Simeon, following a fatal altercation that led to the death of Ifeanyi Chukwu at Utako Market, Abuja.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred around 9:30 AM on Tuesday. The police received a distress call about a fight at the busy market and swiftly responded.
Upon arrival, they found Ifeanyi Chukwu lying unconscious on the ground. He was immediately rushed to NNPC Hospital, Utako, where a doctor confirmed him dead.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the dispute between Onu Simeon, a resident of Anguwan Biggy, Jabi Daki Biyu, and Ifeanyi Chukwu of Kuchigoro, Lugbe, stemmed from a disagreement over a space to display their goods.
The argument quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which Chukwu suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness.
The police have taken Onu Simeon into custody as investigations continue. Meanwhile, Chukwu’s remains have been deposited at a general hospital for further examination.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Olatunji Disu, urged residents to embrace peaceful conflict resolution, warning that violence often leads to tragic and unpredictable consequences.
He reassured the public of the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order across the FCT.
