President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has underscored the pivotal role of local government systems in bolstering Nigeria’s national security.
Represented by the Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru Abubakar, at a national discussion on security and governance, the President called for urgent legislation to enhance the autonomy and effectiveness of local administrations.
The event, hosted by the House of Representatives at the Abuja Continental Hotel, highlighted the integral function of local governments in delivering essential services such as healthcare, education, sanitation, and social welfare directly to communities.
President Tinubu stressed that empowered local governments are vital for ensuring community safety, prosperity, and resilience.
President Tinubu expressed concerns about the declining state of local government systems, noting that their degradation has significantly hampered national development and the capacity to tackle security challenges effectively.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revitalizing local governments, emphasizing the need for resources and capabilities to drive sustainable development initiatives that foster economic stability and national security.
Commending the House of Representatives and its partners, including the UK International Development and PERL, for organizing the dialogue, President Tinubu expressed hope that the discussions would lead to actionable measures to strengthen local governance in Nigeria.
