A group of 35 pro-reform lawmakers, led by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, have sponsored a bill seeking to amend the Constitution to provide for the rotation of executive power (Presidency) among the six geopolitical zones. The bill also proposes a single term of six years for the President and governors.
At a press conference, Hon. Ugochinyere explained that the bill aims to ensure equal representation, national stability, and inclusion of all regions in the country. He cited Mexico’s presidential system with a single-term presidency of six years as a model for Nigeria to follow.
The bill also seeks to amend the Electoral Act to conduct all elections (presidential, governorship, National Assembly, state houses of Assembly, and local governments) on the same day, reducing costs and increasing voter turnout.
The lawmakers argued that this bill will reduce government spending and wastage on elections, ensure efficiency in governance, and prevent distractions caused by reelection agendas.
The proposed rotation of power between the North and South will be done amongst the six geopolitical zones, ensuring that no zone is left out in six successions.
The lawmakers called for support for the bill, emphasizing that it will bring sanity to the political system and ensure democratic stability.
