Kalu Pushes for Tax Reform, Economic Growth and Security in Nigeria.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has emphasized the importance of tax reform bills in driving revenue and supporting investments in Nigeria. According to Kalu, the existing tax laws are outdated and need to be streamlined to align with global best practices.

Kalu made this statement during a meeting on UK-Nigeria Strategic Dialogue in London, where he also highlighted the legislative agenda of the 10th House of Representatives. The agenda prioritizes national security, law reforms, economic growth, and social sector reforms, among others.

The Deputy Speaker also discussed the Constitution review process, which aims to increase women’s participation in politics, improve local government autonomy, and address localized security challenges. Additionally, Kalu expressed gratitude to the UK government for their support and requested expanded support in areas such as capacity building, security collaboration, and human rights advocacy.

In terms of economic reforms, Kalu explained that the President Tinubu administration is focused on removing fuel subsidies, intervening in the foreign exchange market, and promoting regional development commissions. The parliament is in support of these reforms, which aim to diversify the Nigerian economy and address climate change concerns.

Kalu also touched on the security situation in the South East, where he has adopted a non-kinetic approach to address escalating insecurity. He believes that the Leader of the Indigenous People’s of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has subscribed to peace, and efforts are being made to release him from detention.

Kalu’s statements emphasize the need for tax reform, economic growth, and security in Nigeria, as well as the importance of international cooperation and support.
