Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has emphasized the importance of supporting the Seat Reservation In Parliament Bill, which aims to empower women to take their rightful place in the corridors of power. Kalu made this call while speaking at a dinner banquet organized in his honor by the Osasu Show Foundation, United Nations Women, and the Policy Innovation Center.
Kalu stressed that the bill seeks to address the longstanding narrative of exclusion and underrepresentation of women in the political landscape. By reserving seats for women in the National and State Assemblies, the bill aims to dismantle systemic barriers and create a legislature that truly mirrors the rich diversity of the nation. He emphasized that this is not about charity, but about justice, strategy, and national prosperity.
The Deputy Speaker also highlighted the rationale behind the bill, which is rooted in the understanding that a representative government must reflect the people it serves. Historically, women have been marginalized in the political process, and this bill is a strategic intervention designed to correct that imbalance. Kalu emphasized that the inclusion of women is not a favor, but an imperative for achieving comprehensive and sustainable national development.
Kalu further stated that the piece of legislation stands as a beacon of collective belief in the transformative power of women’s leadership. When women participate fully in governance, societies flourish, and their perspectives contribute to more equitable and holistic policymaking. He acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead but expressed his commitment to pursuing the noble cause of gender equality.
The Deputy Speaker also drew inspiration from the Beijing Declaration, which has transformed the women’s rights agenda globally. He emphasized that legal protection and affirmative action, like the provisions in the Seat Reservation for Women Bill, are essential instruments in the fight against discrimination.
Kalu’s call for support for the Seat Reservation In Parliament Bill is a significant step towards achieving gender equality and empowering women to take their rightful place in the corridors of power.
