Kalu Calls for Sacrifices to Support Nigerians, Urges Colleagues to Cut Salaries

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has called on his colleagues to sacrifice 50% of their salary for 6 months to support indigent Nigerians. This call was made during a plenary session on Thursday, where Kalu amended a motion to appeal to the proponents of a nationwide protest to maintain peace and engage with the government.

Kalu acknowledged the economic hardship in the country but appealed to the citizenry to be patient with the federal government. He emphasized that the solution to the economic challenges is not found in protests but by supporting the policies of the government. The Deputy Speaker recalled that members of parliament had previously slashed their salary to assist less privileged Nigerians during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.

The motion was adopted after a voice vote, and Kalu appealed to his colleagues to take the message of hope to their various constituencies. He emphasized that the solution to Nigeria’s problems is not found in protests but in supporting the policies of the government and understanding that these policies need time to materialize.

Kalu’s call for sacrifices is seen as a patriotic and sacrificial move to support Nigerians during this challenging time. He urged his colleagues to join him in making sacrifices to help those in need, stating that “we are all in this together”.

The Deputy Speaker’s appeal is a call to action for all Nigerians to come together and support one another during this difficult period. By making sacrifices and supporting the policies of the government, Nigerians can work towards a better future for all.
