IGP Warns Against Unorganized Distribution of Palliatives During Festive Season

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed deep concern over the uncoordinated distribution of palliatives and relief items across the country during the festive season, describing it as a serious threat to public safety.

Speaking through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, in Abuja, the IGP highlighted the urgent need for a structured and effective approach to delivering aid to vulnerable groups, especially the elderly and youths.

He called on government officials, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations to collaborate in establishing a comprehensive framework for the safe and organized distribution of palliatives.

The IGP warned event organizers to ensure the involvement of security agencies in such activities, stressing that negligence is a criminal offense under Section 196 of the Penal Code and Section 344 of the Criminal Code, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The unorganized distribution of palliatives poses significant risks, including stampedes and confrontations, which endanger lives. We must prioritize public safety in all such efforts,” the IGP stated.

He further urged citizens to exercise caution when attending palliative distribution events to avoid unforeseen tragedies.

In light of recent incidents, the IGP has directed Commissioners of Police in the affected states to conduct thorough investigations and take appropriate legal action where necessary.

Reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to public safety, the IGP pledged to work with stakeholders to create a safer and more structured environment for aid distribution. This, he noted, will help prevent future tragedies and ensure seamless processes.
