In a bid to bolster internal security and operational efficiency, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has ordered a comprehensive reorganization of the Police Mobile Force (PMF).
The directive, which was issued during a strategic conference with PMF Squadron Commanders at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, is part of ongoing reforms to reposition the PMF as the elite tactical unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the IGP, “The PMF must return to its core mandate as the strike force of the Nigeria Police, focused on swift response to emergencies, violent threats, and riots.” He expressed concern over the deviation of PMF personnel to non-operational roles, including escort services for VIPs, which he said has diminished the unit’s effectiveness.
To remedy this, IGP Egbetokun announced several key measures, including the immediate withdrawal of PMF officers from unauthorized duties, the institution of quarterly training on ethics and professionalism, and the standby deployment of fully equipped combat-ready units in all PMF Squadrons.
He further stated that, “PMF Commanders will henceforth be held accountable for the actions of their personnel,” urging them to lead with discipline and ensure continuous training, inspections, and mentorship to uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
The Police Chief also revealed plans for new leadership strategies and capacity-building initiatives to align the PMF with global best practices and address emerging security threats more effectively.
While appreciating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his unwavering support, the IGP acknowledged the contributions of international partners in improving the technical and training capacity of the Force. He charged all PMF Commanders to embrace the reforms as a moral and professional duty, reaffirming the Force’s dedication to safeguarding lives and national assets.
