IGP Egbetokun’s Tenure Legal, Says Attorney General

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has affirmed that the continued stay of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, in office is lawful and in line with the provisions of the amended Police Act.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the AGF clarified that while Egbetokun was initially expected to retire upon reaching the age of 60 on September 4, 2024, recent amendments to the Police Act have extended his tenure.

The amendment allows the IGP to serve a full four-year term regardless of age, effectively extending Egbetokun’s tenure until October 31, 2027.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Egbetokun’s continuous stay in office is in line with the provisions of the Police Act amended in 2024, which allows the occupant of the office to enjoy a term of four years effective from the date of his appointment as IGP, in this case, October 31, 2023,” Fagbemi stated.

The clarification comes amid speculations over the IGP’s tenure, with concerns raised about the legal basis for his continued service.

The AGF assured the public that Egbetokun’s tenure is backed by law and urged stakeholders to take note of the statutory provisions governing the office.

Egbetokun was appointed as the Inspector General of Police on October 31, 2023, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his term is now expected to run until 2027, following the amendment to the Police Act.
