IGP Egbetokun Warns Against Violent Protests Amidst Rising Tensions

In a tense atmosphere filled with anticipation, Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D, NPM, convened an emergency conference at the Goodluck Jonathan Peace Keeping Hall, Force Headquarters. Amidst ongoing security challenges, the IGP’s address took on a heightened urgency with the specter of potential nationwide protests looming large.

With a firm tone, IGP Egbetokun highlighted the troubling surge in public asset vandalism and theft, alongside the persistent threats of terrorism, banditry, and other crimes. However, it was the rising wave of mobilizations for protests, particularly those inspired by recent events in Kenya, that commanded immediate attention.

“Some groups, self-appointed ‘crusaders and influencers,’ have been strategizing and mobilizing potential protesters to unleash terror in the land under the guise of replicating the recent ‘Kenyan protest debacle,’” Egbetokun stated, underscoring the police’s commitment to maintaining order while respecting citizens’ rights to peaceful protest.

The IGP’s warning was unequivocal: while the right to protest is constitutionally guaranteed, any descent into violence or disorder will not be tolerated. Drawing parallels to the 2020 #EndSARS protests, which resulted in significant destruction and loss of life, Egbetokun stressed the necessity of avoiding a repeat of such chaos. “Our position is that the proposed violent protests are ill-advised and should be jettisoned forthwith,” he asserted.

To underscore the police’s readiness, Egbetokun detailed the strategic measures already in place to counter potential disruptions. These include enhanced intelligence-gathering capabilities and close collaboration with other security agencies. “We will not sit back and fold our arms to watch violent extremists unleash violence on our peaceful communities,” he vowed.

Beyond addressing immediate threats, the conference also served as a platform to discuss the forthcoming launch of the Nigeria Police Green Initiative (NPGI), aimed at adopting environmentally friendly practices within the force. However, the shadow of potential unrest cast a pall over the proceedings.

The Inspector-General’s address concluded with an appeal to Nigerian youths, urging them not to be manipulated by those with selfish ambitions. He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support and reform agenda, which has bolstered the morale and operational capacity of the police force.

As Nigeria stands on the precipice of potential unrest, the message from the police leadership is clear: while peaceful protests will be protected, any move towards violence will be met with firm resistance. The nation’s security apparatus remains on high alert, ready to safeguard lives and property amidst these challenging times.
