The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, on Wednesday presented Group Life Assurance and welfare cheques worth over N2.17 billion to families and next-of-kin of deceased police officers.
The ceremony, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, was described by the IGP as both a solemn moment of remembrance and a demonstration of the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families.
According to Egbetokun, the cheques amounting to N2,171,124,041.87k will be disbursed to 1,574 beneficiaries under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes, covering policy years from 2015 to 2025. He noted that some of the claims had remained outstanding for nearly a decade but were redeemed through persistent engagement.
“Behind every badge is a family that bears the weight of sacrifice, and those families will never be forgotten by the institution their loved ones served,” the IGP said.
Since assuming office as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police, Egbetokun revealed that this was the 11th phase of the welfare exercise, bringing the total disbursement to ₦24.2 billion, benefiting 9,735 families of fallen officers.
He emphasised that police welfare remains a top priority of his administration, stressing that reforms are underway to strengthen welfare systems, digitise processes, and ensure that entitlements are processed without delay.
The IGP commended the Force Insurance Unit for its professionalism and acknowledged insurance partners for fulfilling their obligations. He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his consistent support for police welfare, as well as the Ministry of Police Affairs for its guidance.
“To the families here today, I extend my deepest condolences. We know the void left by your loved ones cannot be filled by any monetary sum. Yet, these cheques are a symbol of our gratitude and a pledge that you remain part of the Nigeria Police family,” he added.
The event concluded with prayers for the souls of the fallen heroes and renewed commitment by the Force to uphold their legacy of courage, honour, and sacrifice in the service of the nation.
