In a significant move to combat cancer, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, has announced plans to legislate on the disease and make diagnosis and treatment easier and more affordable for Nigerians. Speaker Abbas made this known at a seminar for First Ladies from member countries of the Africa Group of the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Abuja on Thursday.
Cancer, described by Speaker Abbas as one of Africa’s biggest health challenges, is hindered by several factors, including lack of infrastructure, inadequate personnel, late diagnosis, and high cost of treatment. To address these challenges, the 10th House of Representatives is committed to enacting a National Cancer Act. This legislation aims to reduce cancer mortality through comprehensive measures, including:
– Promotion of cancer screening and early diagnosis
– Treatment advancements and palliative care
– Greater investments in cancer care infrastructure
– Establishment and strengthening of comprehensive cancer treatment centers
– A Cancer Drugs Fund to ensure access to cutting-edge treatments
Speaker Abbas acknowledged the Nigerian Government’s efforts to combat cancer, including the establishment of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) and the National Strategic Cancer Control Plan 2023-2027. However, he emphasized the need for sustained investment and comprehensive policy implementation to address significant gaps in cancer care, particularly for the poorest and most vulnerable populations.
The Speaker commended the First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for her tireless efforts and dedication to the health and well-being of Nigerian citizens, particularly the vulnerable. The seminar, which brought together First Ladies from OIC member countries, demonstrated the collective commitment to combat cancer and created a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and strategic action against the disease.
With this legislation, the 10th House of Representatives is poised to make a significant impact in the fight against cancer, ensuring that Nigerians have access to easier and more affordable diagnosis and treatment options.
