House of Representatives Considers Bill to Reserve Seats for Women- Kalu

The House of Representatives is currently considering a bill to reserve seats for women in parliament, according to Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu. The “Seat Reservation Bill,” sponsored by Kalu and his colleagues, aims to alter the Constitution to provide special seats for women in the legislature.

In a statement signed by Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Kalu at the Women of Divine Destiny Initiative (WODDI) Inspiring Women Summit in Owerri, Imo State, emphasized the importance of gender equality and inclusiveness in Nigeria’s political landscape. He praised the WODDI founder, Dr. Nkechi Rochas Okorocha, for empowering women and helping them achieve their dreams.

Kalu expressed confidence that the bill will pass and help address the underrepresentation of women in legislative institutions. He also highlighted the Peace In South East Project’s (PISE-P) focus on gender issues and its commitment to fostering peace and development in the southeast region.

The Deputy Speaker encouraged the women to unleash their full potential, emphasizing that they are leaders, innovators, and changemakers who can shape a brighter future. He urged them to turn their inspiration into action and illuminate their communities with their talent, passion, and spirit.

I am confident that the women gathered here today will leave WIWS 2024 inspired and equipped. Equipped with the knowledge, connections, and unwavering belief in yourselves, turn that inspiration into action,” Kalu said. “Remember, the power you hold is immense. You are leaders, innovators, changemakers, and the architects of a brighter future. Let the light you have ignited within yourselves continue to shine brightly. Go forth and illuminate your communities, workplaces, and the world with your talent, passion, and uncowered spirit.
