In a landmark moment for the South-East geopolitical zone, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law. This historic milestone marks the beginning of a new era of reconstruction and rehabilitation for the region, 54 years after the civil war.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, in a heartfelt speech, expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support and leadership. The SEDC will receive and manage funds for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructural damages suffered by the zone.
The bill’s passage is a testament to the collective effort and commitment of the National Assembly, Nigerians, and President Tinubu. It amplifies the government’s commitment to rebuilding and revitalizing the South-East region.
The Deputy Speaker urged fellow South-Easterners not to join planned anti-government protests but instead view the signing of the SEDC bill as a testament to the President’s resolve to heal the wounds of the past.
With SEDC, the region will leverage opportunities in agriculture, entrepreneurship, digital economy, and cultural development. The Deputy Speaker encouraged active and constructive engagement with governance, citing Chinua Achebe’s words, “A functioning, robust democracy requires a healthy, educated, and participatory followership.”
The Deputy Speaker emphasized unity, shared dreams, and collective efforts as the strength of the region. Together, Nigerians can build a nation that offers every child a decent shot at life, where opportunity remains open to all.
