In a recent oversight visit by the House Committee on Defence to the Ministry of Defence, the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, along with his counterpart, the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, emphasized the importance of a harmonious working relationship with the Nigerian National Assembly.
Minister Badaru commended the collaborative efforts between the Ministry and the National Assembly, citing its pivotal role in enhancing the smooth execution of activities and programs within the Ministry.
He noted that the modest achievements recorded thus far would not have been possible without such cooperation.
Reiterating the commitment of the government to eradicate terrorism and insurgency from the country, Minister Badaru highlighted the significant role played by the National Assembly through appropriation to the Ministry.
This support has enabled the Nigerian Military to achieve remarkable success in combating various security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, oil theft, and terrorism.
Furthermore, Minister Badaru pledged the Ministry’s dedication to ensuring the timely provision of welfare and entitlements to the Armed Forces.
He emphasized that such support would serve as a motivational factor for the personnel engaged in the ongoing fight against insecurity in the nation.
During the visit, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, provided insights into the achievements and challenges faced by the Ministry.
In response, the Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Honourable Babajimi Benson, articulated the purpose of the visit.
He expressed the Committee’s commitment to identifying areas of challenge to assist the Ministry in fulfilling its mandate effectively. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of strategic planning for the year 2024 to address evolving security concerns.
The visit underscored the significance of a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Defence and the National Assembly in tackling security challenges, reaffirming their shared commitment to safeguarding the nation and its citizens.
