Hardship: 50% Salary Cut Renewable After 6 Months – Speaker Abbas

.. Says we’re working to end hunger in Nigeria

… Pleads for patience with the government

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Ph.D., announced that the 50% salary cut by the House members, aimed at alleviating the economic hardships faced by indigent Nigerians, may be renewed after six months.

Acknowledging the shared economic struggles, Speaker Abbas emphasized that no sacrifice is too great to ease the hardship. He urged the public, especially the youth, to be patient as efforts are ongoing to end hunger in Nigeria.

Speaker Abbas also appealed for calm and advised against planned protests, stressing that such actions could hinder the country’s development. His remarks were delivered by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, at the inauguration of the National Legislative Network on Nutrition and Food Security and his investiture as Patron, organized by the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security.

“The current economic challenges and rising food prices underscore the need for this gathering,” Speaker Abbas said. “Today’s event renews our nation’s optimism and reassures Nigerians that we, as their representatives, are committed to supporting the federal government’s efforts to address food and nutritional issues. We are beginning a crucial journey to restore hope and enhance well-being.”

He continued, “These are challenging times for all citizens, but we have shown our concern by contributing 50% of our salaries to support food supplies. This contribution is renewable after six months, and if necessary, we will continue it. However, we must work closely with the executive to find sustainable solutions to our food challenges.”

Speaker Abbas reiterated the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to addressing the economic situation. “We are dedicated to collaborating with President Tinubu’s government to find lasting solutions. Today’s event, with key stakeholders present, reflects this commitment.”

He urged Nigerians to support the government’s efforts and avoid protests that could worsen the situation. “We are managing a problem and must not escalate it. Protests are not the solution. Support the government’s policies, and with patience, we will achieve greater gains in the future.”

“We will not rest in our legislative efforts to improve this situation. You can count on us,” Speaker Abbas concluded.
