Governor Zulum Mourns Chief of Army Staff, Praises His Contributions to National Security

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has extended his condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the family of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, following his sudden death.

In a heartfelt message, Governor Zulum described General Lagbaja’s passing as a significant loss for Nigeria, highlighting the General’s dedication and impactful leadership.

“General Lagbaja’s leadership qualities were inspirational. He consistently motivated troops with his presence at the frontline, showing unwavering commitment to securing the nation,” Zulum said.

Governor Zulum lauded General Lagbaja’s vital role in the fight against insurgency, referring to him as a “quintessential infantry General” whose leadership in Operation Hadin Kai contributed to stabilizing multiple regions, including the northeast.

“On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I extend my deepest condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the bereaved family during this difficult time,” he added.

Reflecting on General Lagbaja’s influence, Zulum recalled the 2023 Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference, hosted in Borno State under Lagbaja’s leadership. The conference marked a turning point in strategic counter-insurgency efforts, resulting in significant progress toward peace in Borno and surrounding areas.

Governor Zulum further credited the success of military operations such as Operation Desert Sanity and Operation Lake Sanity, which weakened Boko Haram’s presence in the Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad region, to General Lagbaja’s tenure.

Governor Zulum offered prayers for General Lagbaja’s soul and strength for his family as they navigate this immense loss.

Dauda Iliya, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, issued the statement on behalf of Governor Zulum.
