Governor Dauda Lawal today welcomed a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fact-finding team to the Government House in Gusau, underscoring his confidence in the professionalism and commitment of the NAF amid ongoing operations to combat banditry in the region.
The team, led by Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, Director of Coordination and Cooperation of the Civil-Military Relations Branch, was dispatched on the orders of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar.
Their mission is to investigate reports of civilian casualties following a NAF airstrike in Zamfara State on 11 January 2025.
During the meeting, Air Vice Marshal Gabkwet emphasized the NAF’s dedication to transparency and adherence to international standards in its operations. 
He highlighted the Service’s respect for the sanctity of human life as a guiding principle and assured the Governor of a thorough and impartial investigation into the reported incident. Gabkwet also expressed gratitude for the Governor’s support and hospitality.
Governor Lawal reaffirmed his unwavering support for the military’s efforts to restore peace in Zamfara State.
While acknowledging the unfortunate nature of collateral damage, he noted that such incidents are sometimes unavoidable in complex military engagements.
Based on preliminary reports, the Governor expressed his belief that the incident was not intentional and urged the team to convey his appreciation to the Chief of the Air Staff for the NAF’s ongoing contributions to the state’s security.
Following the meeting, the NAF team proceeded to Tungar Kara, the site of the airstrike, for an on-the-ground assessment.
The data gathered from their investigations will be analyzed to guide future operations and strengthen measures for the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. 
The NAF’s presence in Zamfara is part of its broader strategy to eradicate banditry and terrorism in Nigeria’s North West region, reaffirming its role as a vital partner in the nation’s security efforts.
