Give Nigeria Permanent Seat at UN Security Council, Kalu Urges World Powers in New York

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has called for a more inclusive approach to multilateralism, emphasizing the need for developing countries to have a greater voice in global decision-making.

Speaking at the Heads of Parliaments meeting in New York, Kalu stressed that the current multilateral approach is driven by the Global North, leaving the Global South to face significant developmental challenges. He urged the United Nations to give Africa, especially Nigeria, a permanent seat at the Security Council.

Kalu argued that multilateralism should be redefined to accommodate the pressing needs of developing countries. He emphasized the importance of inclusivity and cooperation, stating that the concept of multilateralism would remain theoretical without these principles.

Using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an example, Kalu noted that while the goals aim to address global issues, they may not align with the priorities of developing countries. He advocated for increased representation of developing countries in decision-making rooms and tailoring conversations to address their unique challenges.

Kalu also emphasized the need for Africa to be involved in global decision-making, citing the amendment of Article 108 of the UN Charter as a potential solution. He expressed his gratitude to the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and other global parliament leaders for the meeting.
