The Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, has charged management staff of the Ministry and its Agencies to show unwavering commitment to actualizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate on policing reform in Nigeria.
Speaking at the second phase of the 2024 Management Retreat themed “Enhancing Strategic Leadership and Policy Implementation in the Ministry of Police Affairs” at Nugget Hotel, Abuja, Gaidam—represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia—emphasized the need for alignment with global best practices rooted in trust, transparency, and public confidence.
The Minister described the retreat as a critical platform for collaboration and strategic planning, aimed at enhancing workforce quality and institutional professionalism.
“This initiative reflects the current administration’s recognition of the urgent need for transformation within our policing system,” he said. “It is a step towards reshaping the narrative around police reforms in Nigeria, moving beyond rhetoric.”
Gaidam reiterated his commitment to the full implementation of President Tinubu’s 8-Point Agenda as it relates to the policing ecosystem, with a strong focus on the welfare and empowerment of officers to deliver professional and citizen-focused services.
“Security remains our topmost priority, alongside the welfare of our staff. I am committed to driving transformative improvements within the Ministry. Police reform remains a pivotal agenda of this administration,” he added.
He also noted that the responsibility of developing a comprehensive blueprint for sustainable police reform now lies jointly with the National Security Adviser, the Minister of Police Affairs, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission.
In a goodwill message, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun—represented by DIG Basil Idegwu—commended the theme of the retreat, describing it as a timely response to the urgent need to reposition the nation’s internal security architecture.
“It is a strategic move to foster a shared understanding of the ministry’s mission, vision, and expectations in driving internal security reforms and institutional excellence,” Egbetokun said.
Also speaking, Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu—represented by Director of Planning and Research, Dashe Selman Davis—praised President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said is anchored on improving national security, economic growth, and good governance.
In his keynote presentation, public administration expert Dr. Magbadelo Sola highlighted that police reform must address both attitude and accountability, urging continuous review of police performance in line with democratic standards.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including the Secretary of the Police Service Commission, Chief Onyebuchi Nnamani; Director of Planning, Research and Statistics (MPA), Dr. Osuake John Chidi; and other high-ranking officials, all committed to advancing strategic leadership and reform in the police sector.
