The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has impounded at least 50 vehicles during a two-hour special operation along the Giri–Gwagwalada–Lokoja highway, launched to enhance road safety ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The joint operation, conducted with leaders of key transport unions, focused on educating motorists and enforcing traffic rules on the busy corridor, which is notorious for overloading of passengers and goods.
Corps Marshal Mallam Shehu Mohammed, who led the exercise, expressed displeasure over the conduct of some drivers—particularly those of articulated vehicles found grossly overloaded. He ordered that excess passengers be off-loaded immediately.
Mohammed said the Corps is working closely with transport unions to restore sanity on major highways, adding that arrangements have been made to ensure off-loaded passengers receive transport fare to continue their journeys without hardship.
He noted that the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has made adequate provisions to minimise inconveniences during the festive rush.
Warning that the Corps would no longer condone the “madness and rascality” of overloading, the Corps Marshal urged drivers to comply fully with traffic regulations and cooperate with FRSC officers to maintain safety throughout the Yuletide.
He also disclosed that mobile courts will operate across all 36 states and the FCT to prosecute traffic offenders during the festive period. More than 30,000 personnel, he said, have been deployed with the necessary logistics for the special operations, which run until January 2026.
RTEAN National President, Alhaji Musa Mohammed, confirmed that the union has put measures in place to curb excesses by its members. He advised travellers to patronise only designated motor parks and revealed that monitoring task forces have been set up to oversee long-distance drivers.
The two-hour operation was carried out with the support of sister security agencies to ensure the safety of personnel and smooth enforcement of the exercise.
