The Federal Government has officially cleared the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, of allegations linking him to banditry in Zamfara State, following a thorough investigation by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
According to a statement from the Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the accusations against Matawalle were found to be “baseless” and politically motivated. Speaking in an interview on Arise TV, Onanuga explained that despite the serious nature of the allegations, no credible evidence was provided by the accusers to substantiate them. “As far as I know, most of those things are just mere allegations,” he stated, emphasizing that these accusations were “mere fabrications” intended to tarnish Matawalle’s reputation.
The investigation and subsequent clearance of Matawalle underscore the Federal Government’s confidence in his role. Onanuga further noted that the recent cabinet reshuffle by President Bola Tinubu was informed by public perception but that Matawalle retained his position based on his commitment to service and the improvement of security in the North West and nationwide. “People are just bringing out all kinds of fake things and allegations. That is why the man Matawalle is still in the cabinet,” Onanuga said.
Since his appointment as Minister of State for Defence, Matawalle has led key initiatives against insecurity. Recently, his operational visit to Sokoto and successful coordination with Operation Hadarin Daji contributed to the elimination of Halilu Sububu, a notorious bandit leader, along with several of his lieutenants. This achievement, among others, reflects his dedication to eradicating banditry in the region.
The government has called on those who made the unfounded claims to retract their statements and issue a public apology, highlighting that such misinformation only hinders national security efforts. Onanuga also urged opposition figures to support the country’s security initiatives rather than engaging in “pull him down” politics.
Despite facing challenges, Matawalle’s dedication to combating insecurity has earned him the President’s confidence, with many in the administration viewing his achievements as essential to Nigeria’s fight against insurgency.
