The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has strongly condemned an incident of jungle justice in Gwagwalada, where an angry mob attacked a young woman suspected of attempting to steal a two-year-old child.
The incident, which occurred on October 13, 2025, was swiftly brought under control by patrol officers from the Tungan Maji Division, who rescued the victim from being lynched and prevented further violence.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ajao S. Adewale, warned that acts of jungle justice constitute criminal offences and would not be tolerated under any circumstance. He stressed that taking the law into one’s hands is unlawful and could lead to grave miscarriages of justice, especially in cases where suspects later turn out to be innocent.
CP Adewale urged residents to always report suspected crimes or offenders to the nearest police station for proper investigation and legal action, rather than resorting to mob action.
He disclosed that the Command has launched a discreet investigation into the alleged child theft and assured that justice will be served in accordance with the law.
The Police Commissioner further warned that the Command will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute individuals found participating in mob attacks, noting that such behaviour undermines the rule of law and ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in the FCT.
Residents were advised to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, and to report any suspicious activities to the police through the following emergency numbers: 08032003913, 08028940883, 08061581938, 07057337653, or the Police Control Room at 09115629111.
The statement, signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, reiterated that security is a shared responsibility and called on residents to continue partnering with the police in ensuring a safe and lawful society.
