The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, Ahmed Abubakar, suspected of trying to procure ammunition for bandits operating in Zamfara State. Abubakar, a resident of Anguwan Dodo, Gwagwalada, was apprehended on December 7 at around 3:30 p.m. by operatives of the Mabushi Division following a tip-off.
According to sources, Abubakar had contacted a Nigerian Army personnel, Cpl. Yusuf Mohammed, to help him buy 1,000 rounds of ammunition, allegedly meant for bandits in Zamfara in exchange for money. During questioning, he confessed to acting on instructions from his uncle, Ahmed Yakubu, who is currently at large.
The police recovered ₦170,100 from Abubakar, believed to be part of the funds for the illicit deal. The FCT Police Command says the suspect is in custody undergoing further investigation, while efforts are underway to track down his fleeing accomplice.
The arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the activities of bandits and their supporters in Nigeria. Zamfara State has been one of the areas severely hit by banditry, with frequent attacks on communities and kidnappings.
The police have not disclosed further details about the investigation, but the move signals a crackdown on networks supplying arms to criminal groups. The case underscores the challenges of insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria and the efforts to disrupt such operations.
