…..Tasks Member States on Terrorism, Human Trafficking, Climate Change
The Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) sub regional Parliament has inaugurated Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu as a member, while Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Ph.D, urged the parliament to find solutions to terrorism, banditry, piracy, human trafficking, human rights abuses, climate change, and bad governance in the sub-region.
Representing the Speaker, Kalu emphasized the need for increased passion and commitment from member states, stressing that resolutions can only be effective with stronger dedication.
The ECOWAS Parliament has contributed significantly to strengthening democracy, promoting human rights, and promoting peace and security in the sub-region. However, the sub-region still faces challenges such as terrorism, human trafficking, and climate change, which require greater responsibility and cooperation from member states.
Speaker Abbas assured of Nigeria’s commitment to defending and promoting democratic governance, the rule of law, and human rights in the sub-region, and pledged to support the President through legislative measures.
Nigeria will continue to cooperate and partner with the ECOWAS Parliament in building legislative capacity, sharing experiences, and ensuring the implementation of resolutions passed.
The inauguration and goodwill message were part of the formal opening of the 2024 First Ordinary Session of the Sixth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja on Monday.
