The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified that recent remarks made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, were not a call for Nigerians to carry arms, but rather an appeal for citizens to acquire basic survival and self-protection skills.
The clarification, contained in a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, on Friday, followed what the military described as “deliberate attempts” to misrepresent General Musa’s comments during a Channels Television interview on Thursday, August 20, 2025.
According to the DHQ, the CDS had likened self-protection skills to everyday life skills such as driving, taekwondo, judo, swimming, and boxing, stressing that his remarks were aimed at promoting resilience, situational awareness, and lawful preparedness, and not unlawful possession of firearms.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the CDS did not call for citizens to bear arms or engage in any unlawful possession of weapons. He is fully aware of Nigerian laws prohibiting unauthorized carrying of firearms,” the statement read in part.
The DHQ further reassured Nigerians of ongoing successes in the fight against insecurity across the country, attributing these gains to sustained government commitment and the dedication of the armed forces and other security agencies.
“Promoting security awareness at all levels is important. Basic skills such as unarmed self-defence, swimming and driving are valuable life skills that enhance individual preparedness and contribute to national security,” Gusau said.
The Defence Headquarters urged the public to rely on verified reports and avoid circulating distorted versions of public statements, reiterating that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to safeguarding the lives and well-being of all citizens.
