Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has praised the strong diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the European Union (EU), noting a significant growth in their partnership. Speaking at the 2024 Europe Day Celebration in Abuja, Kalu highlighted the steady expansion of Nigeria-EU ties, citing a report by the United Nations.
According to Kalu, the EU’s bilateral trade with Nigeria has surpassed €45 billion as of September 2023, making the EU Nigeria’s largest trading partner, accounting for 20.9% of Nigeria’s global trade. He emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to investment and trade with European partners.
Kalu acknowledged the vital role European businesses play in Nigeria’s economic development and welcomed continued investment in industries, infrastructure, and technology sectors. He also called for renewed commitment to deepening existing relationships and exploring new economic frontiers to address contemporary challenges.
“As we celebrate Europe Day, let us reaffirm our dedication to strengthening our ties and exploring new opportunities for cooperation. By working together, Europe and Nigeria can contribute to a more just, sustainable, and prosperous world,” Kalu said.
