Deputy Speaker Kalu Emphasizes Equality Among Parliament Members

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has reaffirmed that all members of parliament are equal, regardless of political affiliation, economic or social background.

Kalu stressed that leadership positions are privileges granted by the House and members, not symbols of superiority. He clarified that there is no discrimination against any member, old or new, ranking or non-ranking.

This statement comes after a clarification was sought during plenary on Wednesday, where a member alleged preferential treatment towards ranking members. Kalu assured that members are recognized to contribute to debates based on their sitting arrangement, not age, tribe, or experience.

The Deputy Speaker emphasized that presiding officers are servant-leaders, committed to upholding democratic ethos and providing direction to realize the House’s mandate. He assured that the 10th House will remain fair, just, and open to all members, ensuring every voice is heard.

Kalu reiterated that leadership positions do not elevate them above their colleagues, and members will always be accorded respect and recognition in the spirit of equality and brotherhood.
