Deputy Speaker Kalu Addresses Trade Imbalance and NIN Registration Challenges in South Africa

In a recent visit to Johannesburg, South Africa, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, expressed concerns about the trade imbalance between Nigeria and South Africa. He acknowledged the long-standing relationship between the two nations but highlighted the need for greater support for Nigerian businesses in South Africa.

Kalu noted that while South African companies have a significant presence in Nigeria, Nigerian companies face operational hurdles in South Africa. He cited the 2020 trade figures, which showed a significant imbalance, with South Africa importing $2.48 billion worth of goods from Nigeria and exporting only $425 million worth of goods to Nigeria.

The Deputy Speaker also addressed the challenges faced by Nigerians in South Africa in registering for the National Identity Number (NIN). He promised to work with the appropriate authorities to resolve the issues and urged the Nigerian community to foster good relations with their host country, obey the laws, and prove themselves worthy ambassadors of Nigeria.

Kalu’s commitment to supporting Nigerians in the diaspora and addressing the trade imbalance is a step towards strengthening the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa. His call to the Nigerian community to uphold integrity and honesty in all their dealings is a reminder of the importance of positive conduct and patriotism.
