Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has been awarded the prestigious Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by the Federal Government. This honor was announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his national broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day in Abuja.
Kalu was recognized alongside other prominent figures, including Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio and Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who received the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). The Deputy Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives also received the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).
The Nigerian National Honours are a set of orders and decorations conferred upon Nigerians and friends of Nigeria every year, established by the National Honors Act No. 5 of 1964. These honors recognize individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the nation.
As Deputy Speaker, Kalu has prioritized people-oriented legislations and motions, championing landmark bills like the South East Development Commission (SEDC). He also initiated the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P) to promote peace and security in the South East region.
Kalu’s dedication to his role and commitment to Nigeria’s development have earned him this esteemed recognition. His efforts in representing the country in national and international legislative engagements have not gone unnoticed.
