Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Calls for Collaborative Efforts in Addressing Nigeria’s Economic Challenges


Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, highlighted the importance of engaging with finance sector stakeholders during the Sectoral Debate held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024. Emphasizing the commitment of the House to address the nation’s needs outlined in its Legislative Agenda, Kalu stressed the significance of exercising oversight to ensure good governance.

Addressing attendees including the Central Bank Governor, FIRS Chairman, and Ministers of Budget, National Planning, and Finance, Kalu underscored the urgency of tackling economic, fiscal, and revenue challenges facing Nigeria. He emphasized the necessity of fiscal integrity for building trust between the government and its people, ensuring transparency, accountability, and prudent resource management.

Kalu highlighted the importance of synergy among key stakeholders to achieve economic stability and growth, advocating for collaborative efforts to address multifaceted challenges. He called for robust reform measures to stimulate growth, foster innovation, and uplift the lives of Nigerians.

Acknowledging the expectations of the nation, Kalu urged Parliament to provide visionary leadership in crafting policies to address pressing issues like hunger and inflation. He thanked the guests for their commitment and dedication to the task, expressing confidence in achieving a stronger, more resilient Nigeria.

During the debate, each guest was allotted 10 minutes to outline priorities and strategies for addressing the needs of Nigerians. The floor was subsequently opened for Members to pose questions, moderated by Kalu, who emphasized adherence to decorum and seriousness in conduct.

The Sectoral Debate serves as a platform for stakeholders to collaborate and chart a course towards a prosperous and inclusive future for Nigeria.
