DEPOWA Promotes Healthy Living Through Aerobics in Abuja

In a renewed drive to encourage healthy lifestyles and emotional well-being among families of military and police personnel, the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association DEPOWA recently hosted a special Aerobics Exercise for Health in Abuja.

The event tagged DEPOWA DANCE TO DE-STRESS, which drew a large turnout of members, was spearheaded by the President of DEPOWA and wife of the Chief of Defence Staff, Mrs. Oghogho Musa.

She explained that the initiative was part of the association’s broader commitment to supporting the physical and mental health of its members, many of whom face daily emotional and psychological pressures due to the demanding nature of their spouses’ roles in national security.

Mrs. Musa emphasized the importance of exercise in promoting long-term wellness and urged participants to make fitness a routine part of their lives.

“Our goal is to encourage regular physical activity as a simple but powerful way to stay healthy and resilient,” she said.

Delivering a health talk at the event, Dr. Juliet Ango, a Consultant Public Health Physician and Chairperson of DEPOWA’s Medical and Sports Committee, highlighted the dangers of chronic stress, especially among women.

She noted that stress is often overlooked, yet it poses serious risks including high blood pressure, fatigue, and even sudden health collapse.

“Stress is a silent threat. We’ve seen people lose their lives due to unmanaged chronic stress. That’s why it’s essential for women to be intentional about creating time to de-stress and engage in physical activity,” Dr. Ango stated.

She encouraged women to explore different forms of stress relief through enjoyable activities such as dancing, walking, or playing games, stressing the importance of consistency in achieving health benefits.

The aerobics session was not only an opportunity for exercise but also a moment of bonding and fun, as participants engaged in coordinated dance routines and fitness drills under the guidance of professional instructors.

The event concluded with a strong message from DEPOWA on the need for continued advocacy for wellness, unity, and emotional support among security families.

The association reiterated its commitment to fostering a culture of health consciousness and community solidarity across its network.
