DEPOWA President Advocates for Gender Equality and Inclusion on International Women’s Day.


Mrs. Oghogho Gwabin Musa, the President of Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), emphasized the crucial importance of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Addressing an event organized by DEPOWA to commemorate International Women’s Day, themed “Inspire Inclusion Setting the Tone,” Mrs. Musa expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to recognize the remarkable achievements of women globally.

She commended the significant evolution of Women’s Day celebrations and the emergence of various professional and social groups passionately advocating for women’s rights and active participation in societal progress.

Mrs. Musa passionately appealed for united efforts to acknowledge and honor the diverse perspectives and contributions of women from all backgrounds.

She paid tribute to the pioneering women who have driven progress, broken down barriers, and championed justice and equality within their communities.

While celebrating past achievements, Mrs. Musa candidly acknowledged the ongoing challenges facing women, including entrenched systemic barriers and discriminatory practices in education, healthcare, and the economy.

She called for decisive action to dismantle gender stereotypes and discriminatory norms, emphasizing the necessity of policies that uphold women’s rights and promote their empowerment.

Mrs. Musa extended heartfelt gratitude to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering support of women’s causes at home and abroad.

She further stressed the importance of solidarity and collaborative action in shaping a fairer, more inclusive society where every woman and girl can thrive without being hindered by gender-based biases and violence.

In her address, the Special Guest of Honour, Former Minister of Women Affairs Dame Pauline Tallen, urged women to continue standing together and supporting each other until they attain their rightful place in society.

She urged governments at all levels to appoint more women to decision-making positions to ensure women’s inclusion for the nation’s socioeconomic growth.

In her keynote speech, Mrs. Jiritmwa Morgak Goyit emphasized the need for policies that promote women’s inclusiveness and encouraged women to invest in themselves.

She also emphasized the importance of government and other stakeholders investing in women to secure their financial independence.

Earlier, in her welcome address, Fatima Salihu, the committee Chairman for DEPOWA’s 2024 International Women’s Day celebration, recognized the remarkable achievements of women worldwide and advocated for a world where women can realize their full potential.

The event, attended by dignitaries from various sectors, featured panel discussions, a playlet, plaque presentations, and more.
