Defence Minister Reaffirms Central Role of Air Power at NAF Decoration Ceremony

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has restated the pivotal role of air power in Nigeria’s ongoing security operations, describing it as “central to the successes recorded across multiple theatres.” He made the remark on Thursday during the decoration of newly promoted Air Commodores and Air Vice Marshals at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters in Abuja.

Serving as Special Guest of Honour at the ceremony, General Musa said the promotion of senior officers reflects both personal accomplishment and the nation’s confidence in their capacity to provide strategic leadership at a crucial moment in Nigeria’s security trajectory. He noted that with their new ranks come expanded responsibilities vital to safeguarding the nation and advancing the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Addressing the newly decorated officers, the Defence Minister emphasised that elevation to the rank of Air Vice Marshal requires a broader outlook, higher discipline, and deeper commitment to excellence. He described them as custodians of the values and traditions of the Nigerian Air Force, whose decisions will shape the effectiveness of air operations and influence future leaders of the Service.

“The expectations placed on you are high because your elevated position requires clear vision, steady judgement, and an enduring sense of purpose,” he said, urging them to embrace their duties with humility and dedication.

General Musa also highlighted the decisive contribution of the Nigerian Air Force to recent operational gains through precision strikes, tactical mobility, and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. He stressed the need for strengthened inter-Service cooperation, noting that air operations deliver maximum impact only when fully integrated with the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, and other security agencies.

Earlier, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, congratulated the officers, stating that military rank is earned through diligence, competence, and character. He noted that the promotions come at a time when Nigeria grapples with complex threats including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and emerging cyber-related risks.

“Rank is not only worn on the shoulders; it is carried in the mind and in the character,” the CAS said, urging the officers to provide exemplary leadership in translating strategic directives into tangible results.

Both the Minister and the CAS paid tribute to fallen heroes and personnel who have been injured in the line of duty, acknowledging their sacrifices as a reminder of the weight of responsibility borne by senior military leaders. The Minister also commended the families of the promoted officers for their resilience and support.

General Musa reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Defence to strengthening the capabilities of the Armed Forces through strategic policy direction, enhanced capacity development, and institutional oversight. He also commended the CAS for sustaining professional excellence within the Service and expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support to the military.

The ceremony ended with good wishes to the newly promoted officers as they assume higher responsibilities in service to the nation.
