Defence Minister Calls for Unity and Determination to Secure ECOWAS Region

The Honourable Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has urged Defence Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to unite and work with determination to achieve a safer and more secure region.

Speaking at the ECOWAS Defence and Finance Ministers’ meeting held in Abuja, Minister Badaru highlighted the critical need for collective commitment in addressing the challenges of terrorism, violent extremism, and humanitarian crises that threaten the region’s stability.

The meeting focused on providing actionable recommendations for financing and equipping ECOWAS counter-terrorism forces. A significant emphasis was placed on crafting a sustainable financing model to address immediate security threats and lay the groundwork for long-term stability and resilience.

Expressing Nigeria’s deep concern over the persistent security issues in the region, Minister Badaru noted that various attempts have been made to address these challenges, including directives from ECOWAS Heads of State and Government to operationalize the ECOWAS Standby Force.

Minister Badaru urged his colleagues to refine the recommendations and develop robust solutions to the region’s security problems. He emphasized the necessity of critically reviewing financing options, considering the current challenges and financial constraints facing member states.

“We must work together with determination and unity of purpose to achieve a safer and more secure ECOWAS region,” said Minister Badaru.

He stressed that the region’s collective commitment is crucial in developing a sustainable financing model that addresses immediate security threats and establishes a foundation for long-term stability and resilience.
