Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, is representing the country at the United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025, currently underway in Berlin, Germany. The two-day global event, holding from May 13 to 14, is themed “Future of Peacekeeping” and brings together defence and foreign affairs leaders from across the world to deliberate on the evolving nature of peacekeeping operations.
The Ministerial is being attended by high-profile dignitaries, including the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres; Germany’s Minister of Defence, Boris Pistorius; and Dr. Joham Wadephul, the country’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. Their presence highlights the significance of collaborative global security efforts in today’s complex geopolitical landscape.
Minister Badaru was warmly received in Berlin by German officials, including Gunther Krichbaum, State Minister for Europe at the Federal Foreign Office, and Dr. Nils Schmid, Parliamentary State Minister of Defence. Their reception set the tone for robust engagements on Nigeria’s role in international peacekeeping and bilateral cooperation with Germany. 
On the sidelines of the ministerial, the Nigerian Defence Minister held key bilateral meetings. He met with Mr. Niels Annen, German State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, to discuss Nigeria’s economic potential and prospects for collaboration in the military-industrial sector.
In a separate meeting with Dr. Morissanda Kouyaté, Guinea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, discussions centred on regional security, stability, and the need to add value to natural resources as a strategy for driving national development.
The UN Peacekeeping Ministerial serves as a vital platform for shaping the strategic direction of peace operations worldwide and reaffirms Nigeria’s enduring commitment to global peace and security.
