The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the Nigerian Army Artillery Corps retains its pride of place in the nation’s military architecture.
General Oluyede gave the assurance during the 2025 Exercise Vulcan Glow XI study period held at the Nigerian Army School of Artillery, Kachia, Kaduna State.
Represented by Major General Musa Etsu-Ndagi, the Army Chief commended the Corps for its significant contributions to ongoing military operations across the country.
He expressed optimism that the study period and lecture series would serve as a platform for participants to deepen their understanding of modern artillery capabilities and their relevance to contemporary warfare.
“The Artillery Corps has made remarkable progress in equipment repair and maintenance, as well as in research and development initiatives,” he said.
“Our artillery systems have remained both combat enablers and force multipliers, enhancing the operational adaptability, manoeuvrability, and combat readiness of our formations.”
The COAS, therefore, urged participants to proffer feasible and practicable solutions that would further improve operational efficiency and strengthen public confidence in the Nigerian Army.
In his welcome address, the Commander, Corps of Artillery, Major General Zakari Abubakar, noted that the complex and dynamic nature of emerging security threats, coupled with challenges in equipment procurement, had necessitated greater reliance on indigenous innovations for repairs and maintenance of artillery platforms.
He emphasized that continuous training remains critical to achieving effectiveness and success in military operations.
The annual study period, according to him, provides an opportunity to assess the performance of artillery systems, identify gaps, and develop strategies to enhance the accuracy and impact of fire support against adversaries.
This year’s edition has as its theme: “Enhancing NACA through Realistic Training and Maintenance of Artillery Platforms for Effective Fire Support to NA Operations within a Joint and Multi-Agency Environment.”
The event drew participants from all artillery formations and units across the country.
