The Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, has noted the public interest in the Counter Subversion Bill, which he sponsored. To address misconceptions, the following clarifications are necessary:
– The Bill is still at the introductory stage, having been introduced on July 23, 2024.
– The Bill aims to address subversive activities by proscribed groups, aligning with Nigeria’s anti-terrorism framework.
– Similar legislation exists in other countries, including the UK, Spain, India, Turkey, Canada, and Australia.
– The House welcomes robust discussions and engagements from Nigerians on the Bill’s contents and concerns.
– The Bill will undergo thorough scrutiny during Second Reading, followed by a public hearing by the relevant Committee, where citizens can provide input.
– The Bill will then be considered for Third Reading and forwarded to the Senate for concurrence, before being sent to the President for assent.
The Speaker assures Nigerians that the Bill is comprehensive and focused on national security, without targeting any group or section. He promises that the Bill will undergo all necessary legislative processes, allowing ample opportunity for public input.
