Hon. Obi Aguocha-MHR, a member representing the Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, has called for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Kanu, along with three others, has been accused by the Nigerian government of various alleged offences.
In a media release made on Friday, 12th April 2024, Rep. Aguocha-MHR drew attention to the fact that two of the accused, Sawore and Igboho, had been released by the judiciary after their rights as citizens were found to have been violated. He argued that Nnamdi Kanu, also a citizen with a concomitant constitutional right to be granted bail, should therefore be released unconditionally, particularly as Mr. Emefiele, another accused, had already been granted bail.
The member also questioned whether there was one rule for other Nigerians from different zones, and another for Igbo’s within the South East zone, and appealed to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, HE Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, to ensure the unconditional and immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu as a show of goodwill towards the peaceful development of the South East and the well-being of the Igbo people.
Hon. Aguocha-MHR thanked the President in advance for his consideration and hoped that the call for Nnamdi Kanu’s release would be heeded. His statement highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian citizens in accessing justice and having their constitutional rights protected.
