Building Bridges for Peace: Nigeria’s Approach to Tackling Xenophobia and Border Issues- Kalu

In a recent address at the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Debate in Geneva, Switzerland, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, shed light on Nigeria’s innovative approach to managing border challenges and combating xenophobic attacks through parliamentary diplomacy. Highlighting the theme, “Parliamentary Diplomacy; Building Bridges for Peace and Understanding,” Kalu emphasized the significance of strategic diplomacy in fostering global peace.

Kalu’s advocacy for parliamentary diplomacy as an alternative to warfare resonates deeply in today’s turbulent times. Rather than resorting to the “ugly” face of war, Kalu urged nations to embrace dialogue and cooperation as means to resolve conflicts and promote peace. His sentiments echo the wisdom of Sun Tzu, emphasizing the high cost of war in both human and material terms.

Through collaborative efforts with the Executive Arm, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria has made significant strides in restoring normalcy to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) subregion. This includes the reopening of borders to facilitate the free movement of goods and citizens, underscoring the efficacy of diplomatic engagement in resolving regional tensions.

Moreover, Nigeria’s commitment to peace extends to addressing internal strife, such as the ongoing challenges in the southeastern part of the country. Kalu outlined the legislature’s proactive measures, including the “Peace in Southeast Project,” which employs non-kinetic approaches to reconciliation and reconstruction. This initiative not only fosters peace within Nigeria but also serves as a model for post-conflict peacebuilding efforts globally.

In addition to addressing regional conflicts, Kalu advocated for gender equality and inclusion in governance, lamenting the underrepresentation of women in politics. Recognizing the pivotal role of women in fostering democratic governance and peace, he stressed the importance of empowering women in leadership roles.

The pressing need for collective action to address global crises was also underscored, particularly in regions such as Gaza, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (D.R. Congo). Kalu called upon the international community to build bridges for peace and prioritize humanitarian efforts in conflict-affected areas. Highlighting the urgency of the situation in Sudan, he proposed the establishment of a task force by the IPU to address the escalating crisis and prevent further instability in the region.

Nigeria’s approach to tackling xenophobia, border issues, and internal conflicts exemplifies the power of parliamentary diplomacy in building bridges for peace. By advocating for dialogue, inclusivity, and proactive measures, Nigeria aims to foster a more peaceful and interconnected world, where conflicts are resolved through diplomacy rather than violence. As nations grapple with complex challenges, Kalu’s message serves as a beacon of hope for a future guided by cooperation and understanding.
