Badaru Seeks Stronger Defence Ties Between Nigeria and Pakistan

Commends Pakistan’s cost-effective counter-terrorism strategies

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, CON, mni, has called for deeper collaboration between Nigeria and Pakistan in the defence sector, citing the need for strategic partnerships to enhance national security and military innovation.

The Minister made the call during a courtesy visit by a high-level Pakistani delegation led by General Shahir Shamsad to his office at Ship House, Abuja, on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Commending Pakistan’s approach to counter-terrorism, Minister Badaru described it as cost-effective and worthy of emulation, particularly in the areas of local technology development and the use of affordable drones in combat operations.

“We must engage and elevate our relationship. I advocate for partnerships without strings or coercion. Pakistan has effectively addressed the challenges of terrorism and IEDs using local technology and affordable drones,” he stated.

Badaru emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to strengthening its defence capabilities through mutually beneficial collaborations, noting that the historical ties between both nations provide a strong foundation for growth in military cooperation.

He revealed that future areas of cooperation would focus on drone technology and enhancing local manufacturing through the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), with the aim of fostering innovation and reducing dependency on foreign military hardware.

On his part, General Shahir Shamsad lauded Nigeria’s advancements in indigenous defence production, particularly through DICON, and underscored Nigeria’s strategic relevance in Africa.

“Nigeria plays a significant role on the African continent, and its progress in military self-sufficiency is commendable. Strengthening our defence ties will yield substantial benefits for both our countries,” General Shamsad said.

The meeting signals a renewed commitment to expanding Nigeria-Pakistan defence relations, with both sides set to explore joint initiatives in military technology, capacity building, and counter-terrorism operations.
