The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has directed troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division to intensify efforts to combat oil theft, with the goal of boosting the nation’s crude oil production and economic stability.
During a working visit to the 6 Division in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, the COAS condemned the current level of crude oil output, describing it as inadequate to sustain Nigeria’s economy.
He stressed the critical need for enhanced security to support oil exploration and production activities.
In a statement issued by the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Army Chief called on troops to operate with renewed vigor and professionalism, ensuring a secure environment for the oil sector to thrive.
Lieutenant General Oluyede also emphasized the importance of integrity, warning personnel against collaborating with criminal elements or engaging in activities that sabotage the economy.
He stated that any officer or soldier found involved in such acts would face severe disciplinary action in accordance with military and national laws.
Reassuring the troops of his commitment to their welfare, the COAS pledged to provide the resources necessary to enhance their operational efficiency.
He urged them to uphold high standards of professionalism and remain steadfast in their duties.
“The role of the military is pivotal to the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Oluyede said, urging troops to approach their assignments with dedication and integrity.
This directive comes as the Nigerian government continues to tackle the challenges of oil theft, which has significantly impacted national revenue and economic growth.
