In a landmark move, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has assured Nigerians that the 10th National Assembly is committed to delivering a people-oriented Constitution. This promise was made at the end of a two-day retreat organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
The retreat was a significant step towards achieving this goal, as the committee reviewed, rectified, and voted on over 151 bills referred to it by the House. These bills, categorized into thematic areas, addressed critical issues such as:
– Federal Structure and Power Devolution: Redefining the distribution of power between the federal government and states.
– Local Government Autonomy: Enhancing the independence and self-governance of local governments.
– Public Revenue, Fiscal Federation, and Revenue Allocation: Reforming the management and distribution of public funds.
– Electoral and Judicial Reforms: Improving the electoral process and strengthening the judiciary.
Kalu commended his colleagues for their dedication and hard work, emphasizing that the current constitution review process is crucial in achieving a people-oriented Constitution. He urged them to remain committed to the task, expressing pride in the team’s progress and confidence that their collective efforts will yield a Constitution that truly represents the people’s desires.
The Deputy Speaker’s assurance is a significant step towards a more inclusive and representative government. With the committee’s progress and the commitment of the 10th National Assembly, Nigerians can expect a more people-oriented approach to governance. As Kalu aptly put it, “You are the architect of the greater future of Nigeria… Don’t give up. If you don’t get weary in this work, in no distant sign, Nigerians will reap from this.”
